Got this one back in November 2010. It's a four screw K-38 Heavy Target Masterpiece. In late 1954/early 1955 S&W eliminated the upper sideplate screw (the so-called 5th screw). In 1957 S&W began to number their models. In 1961 the triggerguard screw (the 4th screw) was eliminated. So for only two years (give or take a few months) Smith made four screw models with names - no numbers. They tend to be sought out by collectors for no other reason then the fact that there aren't that many of them. On the other hand you have decades of named 5 screw models of differing sizes and calibers and decades of numbered models. If you collect you understand the appeal - or sickness. 6" barrel,.38 Special,Serial number K261XXX,"fishhook" hammer,price:$320.Mfd.1955 Sorry about the rubber grips. I prefer them for shooting, but when I took the photos the factory diamond walnut target grips had been put away. |
