Good grief. My entire right arm went into a spasm whan I saw that. I'd think there would be little need to actually load the thing; the mere sight of it would probably put most desperadoes off.
Although this quote from Mark Twain's "Roughing it" refers to pepperbox revolvers, there surely must have been similar dangers with those earlier multi-barrel pistols:
