It would appear in most areas anymore you always have to be on the lookout..we experienced 2 murders in the state last week as well...one with a knife --the other strangled..

As to the flashlight--if you want to temporarily blind someone the Surefire will do it..unbelievable how bright they are...which could give you that extra second or two if needed to pull out the heat...
