I have to dig out my training books especially for a really young pup ie obedience etc. But what are some games which are good for a young - 9 week or older - puppy to engage in. I try to avoid things that will create bad habits later. Don't let them play and bite shoes too much, don't play tug-of-war with them. I used to let my previous dog, rip some old sheets, by wrapping him up in them and it took him a while to disengage and then bite them. Never did much with our clothes in later life, but used to tear up his own bedding when he got bored. Blitzen as mentioned is doing well with fetching. A bit less well than a week a go. He is encouraged to STAY when the toy is thrown, then told to FETCH, and to COME BLITZEN back to me. Does that quite well still. Then GIVE to release the toy. Then lots of PRAISE. SITTING before he gets his food is encouraged as well. He is getting new experiences. Taken out for a drive in the 4WD when changing taps for the irrigation. Short walks in paddock to the pump house and similar. I think he is starting learn his name. So he is still young so I don't expect too much. Just letting him have fun and setting the ground work for later training. I might shoot a rabbit to skin for its fur, and after freezing it to get rid of fleas, let him play with that, or use it to mark a scent trail for him to discover and follow if he is able??? Fighting and biting is his main two pursuits at the moment. Looking for things to occupy his brain other than those two excellent puppy pleasures. What other games that are fun for a young pointer puppy do you guys and girls use? |
