Some years back, I was fishing off the main wharf in Darwin harbour (Northern Australia) and we were catching spotted mackerel and the largest of these would have been around 3 to 4 feet. One of the other fishermen had just brought a fish to the surface and while trying to get a rope gaff down to it, I picked up my video camera to capture the action. The camera was just coming 'on line' when a huge groper, the size of a 'VW beetle', came out from under the wharf and engulfed this mackerel with ease. That was one huge fish but I missed the opportunity to film it as, when the camera finally started recording, all I got was the huge splash as the groper turned and rocketed back under the wharf. But I will never forget the image of that huge fish, with cavernous mouth open and that mackerel being sucked into it - I don't ever want to swim off that wharf! |
