The Australian Blue Swimmer Crab What a great crustacean to fish, or is it hunt?! And even better to eat freshly caught and cooked on a fire at the beach. Can be caught digging in the mud flats in shallow water during low tide during the day. With a purchased metal crabbing "net" or scoop. or actually better a pitch fork with chicken wire wound on it. The fork prongs allowing easier digging. Looking for darker grey sediment where a crab has buried itself in the mud. Or at night using a light or a spotlight, catching the blue swimmer crabs floating or swimming in the low tide night waters. ![]() The minimum legal length is 11cms measured across the carapace from the base of the largest spines. A personal daily bag limit of forty applies and twenty in the Gulf St Vincent.
