Line wight for river Barra?

What line (Lbs) weight is best for Lure fishing for Barramundi in rivers?
Regards.

Hi Adam

Up around this neck of the woods most of us use 6kg or 8kg on a small/med baitcaster/luring rod setup.

Cheers.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a hundred replies to this. If you're talking of fishing the snags in the estuaries it becomes complicated. If the area has been netted by the barra pros a lot of the fish seem to be around the 550 - 750mm, however to apply enough pressure on a big fish to keep them out of the snags means a bit heavier gear. The gear used by those fishing in a dam like Tinaroo seems to be a lot stronger, last years Barra Bash was won by a 20 kilo fish. That dam is full of snags. There's heaps of info on the net regarding barra fishing, one thing to take into account is the quality of the split rings and triples that come with the lures, some cheap lures have fairly ordinary end gear.

Re: Line wight for river Barra?

We have been using braid for several years now, mainly Finns PRT or Berkley Whiplash. Because of its fine diameter, 20lb is about as light as you would want to go, and 30lb is easier to fish with. That's about equal to 6lb mono in diameter.

If we want to be 'sporting', we can always release them after the photo!

Fine braid allows the use of light-weight reels like the Shimano Curado and still handle fish over a metre, especially from a boat. A decent rod is mandatory, my everyday baitcaster is a GL-3.

Before braid, we used 6kg mono pretty-much exclusively.

Thanks Guys,
I was thinking in the vicinity of 10 to 16Lbs line at first and was surprised with the amount of replies here and on AHN that your best with 20 to 30lbs.
Braid must be the way forward as casting Lures with 20lbs+ line must be hard and need the use of larger gear.

Come to the conclusion that 35lbs braid and 12lbs Mono is the way forward.
