This gun weighs 9 lbs even. Paul Robert writes the following in his letter of Certification:
The records from Rigby state that this was made in 1869 as "best center fire double rifle". for a Mr. M Coates for the sum of 52 pounds 10 shillings. 52 bore
Just 4 years after the end of our Civil War John Rigby made this center fire cartridge gun in 450 BPE 3 1/4 inch case.
The Trapdoor Springfield and the Colt Single Action Armies were both designed in 1873.
Winchester was making the 1866 lever guns and Mauser was making the 1871 bolt action in 43 Mauser.
The Mauser 1871 has not made the transition to the tube magazine 1884 modification yet.
Correct me if I am wrong on these historical moments in time, I just want to focus on this gun that was designed and built in 1869 per Rigby's records and bring your mind forward 147 years to today when I can shoot and enjoy this timeless treasure. I must preserve it and prepare to pass it on.
This is what it is all about, keeping all these old pieces going & the loads/components to do so for generations still to come. You're just part of that fine old rifle's history, I hope your kids & grandkids get to enjoy it as much as you obviously are now! Bloody envious old mate!
