I knew Robert Allen when he worked at Johnston & Murphy in Nashville. He was an executive, but I never knew his job title. I remember most of the guns illustrated in the catalog. I have to say that his most impressive rifle was the Fraser 4 bore double. I believe it is the rifle illustrated in Richard Akehurst's Game Guns And Rifles, illustration no. 69. It weighed in at 22.5 lbs and was designed for spherical ball. Its a little surprising that his John Dickson Round Action 4 bore single wasn't used. It is illustration no. 84 in Akehurst's book. Built in 1886, it was in Mint Condition. We fired it one day down at Owl Hollow Gun Club south of Franklin, TN. That was a memorable shooting experience. |
