A. Francotte Double Rifle 9x57R Sidelock Ejector

Auguste Francotte Double Rifle 9x57R Sidelock Ejector

A. Francotte double rifle, best quality sidelock ejector in 9x57R, S/N 86996. Color case hardened action with 100% vivid original color remaining. The colors are slightly faded on the exterior surfaces, which can be determined only by comparing with the colors on the water table and on the inside of the forend iron. Purdey under bolts with concealed third fastener. Disk set strikers. Carved and beaded fences. Articulated front trigger. Action beautifully engraved with acanthus scroll and signed by L. Smeets.

Stocked to the fences with a beautifully figured piece of dark streaked quarter-sawed French walnut with semi-pistol grip, point-pattern checkering, oval cheekpiece, and checkered butt. Splinter forend with Anson latch.

The barrels are 25” (63.5cm) dovetail lump, with full length hand-filed rib, 1 standing and 1 folding rear sight, front sight with bead. The bores are perfect.

This pre-war rifle remains in excellent, near mint condition. It shows only the slightest handling marks from its 75 or so years.

Cased in contemporary oak and leather trunk case with maker’s label. Weight = 7.37 lbs. A truly outstanding rifle in a great caliber. It has been in my personal collection since 1998.

This rifle is a delight to load and shoot. The groove diameter is .358". It shoots .35 cal. Hornady 250gr. RN bullets. Brass is easily formed from .444 Marlin. Very easy and convenient.

THE GOLD "C" STANDS FOR "CURL"!!!!

A delightful medium bore double rifle!

What a beauty! It was engraved by the same person as my N. Lajot 9.3X74R. Mine was done/signed in 1930. Does yours show a date?

WildCattle, new to the forum, has a Francotte engraved by L. Smeets, also. Maybe we can convince him to post some photos.

Gorgeous. Must be a joy to shoot. Very Nice engraving work. Looks like it came from Francotte yesterday!

L2S,

Sorry for the delay. This morning I shot an extreme close-up of the engraver's signature and added it to the photo array above. You can see that mine is not dated.

Please encourage WildCattle to photograph and post his Francotte.

Would you please photograph and post your N. Lajot and other DR's? We need to drum up some business on the DR Archive Forum!

Thanks guys,
Curl

Wow! What a nice rifle! That rifle would be phenominal woods whitetail medicine. Any hunting use for whitetails in you neck of the woods?

JPK,

Thanks, it's one of my favorites. Haven't tried it in the deer woods yet. I killed my deer last fall with my .500NE!

Curl,

You had me sitting hear at my computer lauging outloud. I was just trying to figure out what you were planning to shoot an elephant with if you needed a 500 NE for a whitetail .

I thought I was the only one who was sick. I was given a Model 86 in 33 win a few years ago. I wanted to try it out so bad I took it out squirrel hunting . I beleive by co-incidence that the following year PA made it illegal to hunt squirrels with a centerfire. At least I hope it was coincidence and no one got the wrong idea of me walking the woods with the 86.

Bill

P.S.- I should note that all the shots I took were of squirrels on the ground with a known backstop. No shots were left fly at squirrels in the trees.

Bill,

I can only dream of using the .500 for what it was intended. But I can damn sure hunt with it, and did so quite a bit last fall. I'll surely hunt with it this year too!

Glad to make your day. Maybe you can mosey down to western Va. and join the hunt one day.

Best,
Curl

P.S. My shot was a good honest 70 yards out of a tree stand in the woods. Right at first light - just light enough to shoot. Cold as hell, about 12 degrees F. One shot to the heart, lights out.

P.P.S. My hunting buddy, on whose land we were hunting had this to say, "Curl I can say one thing for damn sure. There were probably a lot of deer killed in Bath County this morning, but I'll bet the farm that was the only one to die in front of a .500 Nitro Express." The rest of the group were willing to make the same wager as to the whole state of Virginia.

Very nice rare gun you have there.

I was lucky enough to have a francotte 9.3x74r sidelock self opener Griffnee engraved game scenes heel & toe plates exhibition wood and very stupidly, I let go for 20k about 7 years ago and I have been kicking myself ever since.

Hang on to yours, I saw a 7x57 sell for $50,000.00 at ed stephenows table last year.

Thanks. I remember the rifle that Ed Stepnow had, and I wondered what happened to it, as it was not on his display at Las Vegas this February.

Best regards,

CptCurl,

What an incredibly beautiful rifle! I just love the chequered buttplate, a touch of class that is rare indeed! Very good hunting this deer season!
