unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

http://s822.photobucket.com/user/wenninger77/library/?sort=3&page=1

Very rare and unique double rifle built by HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) in the cal. .280 Halger.
proof date is 1938. the company HALGER was based in Hamburg until the end of ww II. this
fine dr has fine sidelocks with the original case-colouring.
weight is 6,3 kilos!!!! barrel length 71cm , toal length 112 cm
on a suhler einhakmontage an original ZEISS "zielacht" is mounted. it also has a socalled "springbacke" with which you can adjust the stock.
its the "Jäger Vertikalblock" verschluß /locking which is one nof the strongest lockings
existing. similar one is nowadays used by the ferlach comapny called Herbert Scheiring.

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

Two comments:

(1) IMHO mounting a huge scope like that one on a finely diminsioned double rifle is a crime, as is the pop-up cheek piece used to accomodate to it. I understand the justification that the rifle is to be used shooting Schwarzwild (wild boar) from a Hochsitz under twilight conditions, but to me that is a total perversion of the purpose of a double rifle, which is to provide two quick shots at dangerous game from close range under extreme conditions. It's like putting a trailer hitch on a Ferrari, or hitching Man o' War to a plough.

(2) I don't understand how the scope mount works. If it is, as it appears to be, a SEM (claw mount), how can the scope tip far enough forward to disengage, given how far back the front ring is on the bell?

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

hallo xausa,

i have to correct myself. its not a clawmount ist a socalled "aufschubmontage" / railmount.
i fully agree that a scope like this is not for the original purpose
a double rifle is built for - same with the choosen calibre - which is also not the calibre someone
would choose for a double rifle. this gun was composed as it is for longer range red deer hunting.
the calibre was one of the favourite calibres of the prewar owner whose favourite scope was the zeiss
zielacht (8x).

Many people think like you but in middle Europe it is quite common to use double rifles in many kind of hunting. I´m quite sure that the most common double caliber in Germany is 7x65R which tells all.

Sure clicked on the wrong box that time ...

Meant to add that I am not a fan of those pop-up check pieces and hit "Delete" instead of "Change".

Jeez, maybe I am losing it.

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

Igorrock,

I am aware of the Middle European propensity to use double rifles in smaller calibers. I have the equivalent of one myself. It is a combination gun 16/7X75RSE vom Hofe, with a full length insert barrel in caliber 6X52R Bretschneider in the shot barrel, making it virtually a Bergstutzen.

However, it is a Bockwaffe (over and under), which in my opinion is better suited for a flat shooting long range cartridge like the Halger .280.

It is also fitted with a set of double rifle barrels in 9.3X74R, a more appropriate caliber for driven game or hunting in Africa.

Just my (prejudiced) opinion!

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

Completely fabulous rifle.

On double rifles being basically or solely for dangerous game and short distance shooting I disagree.
I have seen and handled many very early doubles, some muzzle loading and some cartridge guns, some SxS and some O/U, which were built as stalking rifles.

I'm sure this rifle will do very well past 300 yards.

Cheers

hi tinker,

i fully agree. i have a prewar 8x75RS which shoots on 100m just the distance of the 2 barrerls
about 1,5cm. thats fantastic. doubles sometimes can do more than we expect ;-))))

That is a most unique breeching system. I'd love to be able to see it in person.

Wonderful old rifle

feinejagdwaffen,

Thanks for sharing, a lovely gun in excellent condition with a truly unique action. I'm betting that the internal mechanism is beautifully polished and very slick.

I believe that in that time period and later, if you went to a gunsmith with the coin, you could have the gun made in whatever configuration you liked, with the sighting you desired, which many did.

Thanks again.

cheers

dear taylor416

you are absolutely right. the mechanismen still works after more than
70 years absolutely smooth and perfect.
nowadays in the world of cnc its not so easy to find experts who are willed
and capable to do such a work.

That's a fine rifle. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you were able to post the photographs successfully.

I believe this is the same breeching system now used on the Blaser double rifles. Am I correct?

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

thanks with your advise and help it was rather simple to post fotos;-)))) !!
thanks again

you are right its similar to blaser and herbert scheiring, but the locking
is with this franz jäger kipplauf vertikalblockverschluß even more complex as
it also locks vertically in the barrel front. this really requested an absolut
accurate master gunsmith.
this vertical kipplaufblockverschluß was developed by franz jäger & co
waffenfabrik, suhl in 1906 and was patented with "reichspatent nr.209113 on

That is a beautiful double rifle, and what an interesting breeching mechanism!
There is a lot to like about that rifle, and it appears to be in very good condition.
Thankyou for showing us those detailed photos.

I would love to see a photo showing the entire rifle.

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

Curious, but what is the length of pull on this rifle?
My Halger bolt gun had something like 15-1/2" over a horn plate and a 28" barrel and a long forend so it really was a huge gun.
The other 280 Halger I had handled also had a very long stock.
My guess is that Halger built every rifle to order though.

this double is 37cm. it always depends on the guy who is ordering the rifle.

What a beautiful example of the Franz Jager locking tilting block, that was, and still is, the strongest double rifle bolting system in existence, with many examples having now been chambered in most of the highly intense cartridges known. Yet, due to what some people consider a design as being ugly, as in the modern version of the tilting block bolting system seen in the Blaser. More double rifle lovers would do well to become much more familiar with this system, and much more credit should be given to Franz Jager for this design

Re: unique double rifle from HALGER (Halbe&Gerlich) .280

The "CFT" stamp on the watertable of this double rifle is interesting, as it points to the real gunmaker who made this rifle for Halbe & Gerlich, Hamburg. This is the fourth gun with this mark I know. First I saw it on the 12/12/7x57R drilling, proofed July 1937 and retailed by Wilhelm Pieter, Halberstadt, that I inherited from my grandfather. I first believed it should be read "TCF" for Teschner - Collath in Frankfurt on Oder, as that drilling, though of conventional design, has a Collath type barrel selector. Then I saw it on an early, 1915, snap action underlever over/under combination that was definitely not "Collath". My research for articles on Collath in "Der Waffenschmied #45" of the German Gun Collectors Association showed that Collath did not use this stamp. But in an earlier GGCA publication a Drilling marked and sold by J.J.Reeb, Bonn, was shown that also has this stamp and bears another small stamp: "C.F.Triebel / Suhl". So all these guns, even this "Halger" double rifle, were actually made by Christoph Friedrich Triebel, Grosse Backstrasse 14, Suhl, founded about 1800 and still existing in 1945. Though there were 45 other gunsmithes named "Triebel" active in the German guntrade at some time or another, the C.F.Triebel company was well known for making highest quality special order guns for many "name" gunmakers.

Just lovely & it was sourced from Christian Friedrich Triebel of Suhl's shop. Can you pleasure us with some images of the flats/underside of the tubes? Where are you near Frankfurt?
