Amazing you said that--recently I read an article about the life of a .470 and how they traced the history of a .470 used by a Andrew Dawson with Chifuti Safaries--it turned out that it had indeed been used by both a famous PH and Author as well...Andrew is NOT willing to sell/trade the rifle especially knowing now the history.
Yeah, the Carl Akeley/John Dugmore/Peter Capstick double from Evans. If he ever auctions it, it'll bring a fortune. Why somebody who owns an older British rifle from a firm that records survive for wouldn't bother to check them is beyond me. These rifles were always extremely expensive, and the chances of finding a significant connection are good. Not long ago, I advised a friend who was looking at an Army & Navy double rifle to check the records. Turned out it was built for the Gaekwad of Baroda, probably the most important and influential Maharaja of his day, and certainly one of the wealthiest.
