I would take a look at a Chapuis in 9,3x74R, 7x65R or one in 30-06.

I have used my 9,3 Chapuis a great deal in the US Canada and Zimbabwe.

I would not call it a hard kicker, but it is not a "bench gun" either.

It would be, however, a double that would serve him well the rest of his life.
