It was a non-ejector. It had 24" barrels and was 10 lbs, 3oz, so it probably handled well. I know what you mean though. Actually, in my experience, the Jeffery's in this caliber that tended toward the clunky are those that didn't come from Leonard. A good friend has a nice No. 3 grade Jeffery .400 from Leonard. It has 24" barrels, is stocked with plain cheeks like this one, but has the familiar Jeffery game scene engraving, no cheekpiece, and grooved butt with heel and toe clips. It's 10 lbs, 2 oz and is delightful, although I don't care for 24" barrels. My Leonard .400 was built for A. Hollis & Son. It has 26" barrels, nice scroll, is stocked with panels and points with cheekpiece, and leather pad. It's also 10lbs, 2oz, and handling doesn't get any better. It's otherwise identical twin in .470 is on Holland & Holland's New York website. Other than caliber, there are no differences. Yeah, they're crazy too. The Jeffery doubles from other suppliers are usually heavier, and don't handle as well. |
