Re: A Handsome Working Double!!

That's a tough comparison to make.

The gun in the link is a W. J. Jeffery, and is a basic model. Jeffery used a number of different suppliers. This gun looks like it's probably from Harry Leonard, one of the best of the "trade" makers, but I can't be sure since it's been sold. In good shape, these are excellent rifles.

Look, when a prospective buyer is DR shopping, they have "X" dollars to spend, and they either want a "new" gun or a "vintage" (whatever that means) gun. You find few that will really consider both. I quit trying to reconcile the logic long ago.

For the new gun buyers in the under $20,000 range, the Heym is easily better than the rest in terms of quality. They really build a fine rifle for the price. However, a new-built replacement for that Jeffery, built to the same quality standard as the original, will easily cost three times as much, and a comparison between a gun built to a price and one that isn't is hardly fair. In other words, it doesn't make sense to try to compare a new sub-$20,000 gun and a used $60,000 gun that's in nice shape and is available for similar price. It just depends on what is important to the buyer, and what he's comfortable with. Personally, I've never owned a "new" double rifle.
