Well, if I had to make a choice today I would go with Chapuis simply because of the price difference...I can't find Merkel's for less than $6500 and I can get a Chapuis for about $2000 less (which buys a hell of a lot of ammo). I'll probably keep looking for awhile but right now it looks like I'll be purchasing my first French firearm soon.
