Congratulations to Bill Stewart on his article about double guns vs. bolt guns for elephant hunting (African Hunter, number 2 of 2007). I would offer two comments in response to the article: 1. Bill says he has never knocked an elephant down or turned it with a near miss to the brain. He has hunted with calibers from 416 Taylor to 470 NE. My personal experience is that elephants always turn or drop with a near miss to the brain. I have used 500 NE, .505 Gibbs and .585 Nyati. Perhaps the larger calibers are what account for knockdowns. 2. The article includes a pic of Ian Nyschens hunting elephant in a double breasted suit. And now I feel somewhat ashamed of my hobo hunting attire which consists of cutoff jeans and a fishing shirt. Should we return to wearing formal attire for hunting? Perhaps the British members of the forum can offer the best guidance on this point. |
