Had my local gunshop look into it last week, the Australian Remington distributors told him not to hold our breath for a 45-70, either Remington or Baikal, rumour has it, 2 were made initially, 1 displayed at the shot show last year and the other one was blown up due to someone in the U.S putting something like Cor-Bon loads in it. Not sure exactly how much of this would be true, just repeating what Morgan told my gun dealer. Having said that, I recently looked at a 30-06 SxS Baikal in a shop, really nice and it retailed for $1250-00 AUD. I think the problem will be barrel wall thickness in the 45-70's, as the action Baikal used for the 30-06 is really nice and trim, looks like a 410 size action, and consequently barrel wall thickness would be limited to what looks OK on the action. Comb was a bit high for open sight use on the 30-06, but for $1250-00, you wouldn't mind taking a bit off it. Nice little quarter rib on it and a very nice hidden regulating screw in front of the forend, hidden in the lower rib. Looks like it might be very interesting, still thinking about buying the 30-06 I saw, just to play with one. 450 AM |
