When I shoot my larger calibers I do note a change in impact if I grip the foreend tightly.Ideally the rifle should be lying on something supporting the forend and not the barrel.
This may make a difference for you in the Merkel. I shoot the same gun and get decent groups but am considering getting a one inch recoil pad to keep the stock from hitting my cheek.
Alot depends on how the rifle fits you.
