Chasseur In reply to: Chasseur I have had all kinds, and I find good and bad in all of them. Though I like O/Us, my favorite is the S/S double rifle. However there are several reasons I like different types of S/S double rifles! For example, for pure beauty of line, I like the old back action hammer rifles with Damascus barrels, and very light scroll engraveing, and stocked with AAAAA Cercasion Walnut. The rifles made for show, if done properly are beautiful, as well as costly, and look very nice in their fitted Oak & leather luggage cases with all the tools. My useing rifle will always be a S/S double with a box lock action, with or without ejectors, hammerless, chambered for a rimmed cartridge, of the NE designation, and low pressure, with heavy for caliber bullets in regulation. The chambering range being between 22 Hornet and 500NE. I like the Box lock with side plates, for strength! With this action, very little wood is removed from the very critical wrist area of the stock, and the plates re-enforce this area, as well. Of all the double rifles I have ever seen with their stocks broken enough to put them out of service, the break was in the wrist area of the stock, and every one was a side lock! Some side locks are stronger than others. the side lock, barr action, is far stronger that the back action side lock. But IMO, the box lock with side plates is the best of both worlds, for durability, and it gives up nothing for looks either. Boxlock, with side plates, hammerless, with or without ejectors, with a QD scope attchment in chamberings up to the 400s, and with good wide V, with flip-ups and a flip-up moon, pistol grip stock, from 450 to 500NE. |
