Bonanza: Because I missed the son-of-a-bitch myself last year. I saw it on Hallowell's site and, not wanting it for myself (I'm a .450/.400 guy), didn't call. After thinking about it I decided that, at $12,500, if it was as good as described, I could make a quick $5K on it. It was sent out on approval to a prospective buyer the day before I called, and the guy kept it. I remember telling the guys at the DRSS hunt last year about it. It sounds like a nice gun and is probably still underpriced. When Kynoch was restructuring their line after WWII, the .500/.450 and 450 No. 2 were among the first to be dropped. Since the No. 2 couldn't easily be converted to a more available caliber, I imagine a previous owner had the Ferlach .458 barrels made to solve the ammunition problem. Once the .450 No. 2's availability problems were solved, the new barrels were rechambered to the original caliber. It looks very nice. Don't wing it though, be sure to get it evaluated. As long as it checks out, I think you did fine. So the Leonard number is close to that of the Hollis? -------------------------------------------------------- |
