"500 Grains", thanks - that is a good explanation... “Mick”: My search process has taken some two years and gone something like this: 1. As a member of Safari Club International I get "Safari" (a quality publication) which has excellent coverage of dangerous game hunting, rifles used, and PH opinion. African hunting is a desire and my plan for the future. So my plan to secure a double rifle began to take shape. 2. I began searching the internet gun forums, and joined a few just to open up the member themes. I bought the complete set of “Mark Sullivan” DVDs, his book “Death and Double Rifles”, and called him to discuss interests. (PS: Mark Sullivan was very helpful in getting me focused on a double rifle. And, Mark was not complimentary concerning the Blaser S2, based on what he had been told about the cock/de-cock system. - One may admire or choose to disagree with Mark’s hunting method, but considering the way he hunts anything that might complicate or slow reloading is not a desirable option. 3. About this time I also began to consider that I would like to reduce my hunting proficiency to a fewer weapons. (I am fairly good with a rifle or pistol, I hunt actively, and I enjoy the study of ballistics. I simply have too many interests in various calibers (pistol & rifle) to ever consider achieving proficiency in re-loading. Thus, for double rifle consideration, I selected the .470NE based the ballistics, and the ready availability of Federal factory ammunition (and others) at a reasonable price point.) 4. Fewer weapons has led me to the following: Everyone needs a .22LR for plinking and "critters". A 12Ga. with a selection of screw-in chokes covers my scattergun needs. I selected a Steyr (Cooper) Scout in .308 as my small-medium game rifle (0-200 yards). A .300 Weatherby magnum was selected for medium-large game and shots out to 450 yards. 5 Then to complete my list I knew I needed a large caliber rifle for African game (O-200 yards), and as a "stopper". 6. I have attended SCI conventions, looked at used doubles, talked to other hunters, spent long hours on the internet, wrote to Butch Searcy for advice - and finally decided to join Nitroexpress.com and ask for opinions. So, here I am - still in some quandary, but leaning toward calling Mr. Searcy to get on his build schedule with a .470NE... http://onfinite.com/libraries/359608/a14.jpg |
