I've looked at it a few times and I reckon the first shot hit Leo back in the gut, but, whatever projectile they were using was too hard and just poked a hole straight through the unfortunate Lion, royally pissing him off.

After that I can't say much for sure, other than they achieved diddly (with four guns) when it mattered, except, supposedly, off screen after the lion had, very politely (luckily for them), trotted off.

My expectation (based on nil experience mind you) is that a big 5 capable weapon taken after Lion would be loaded with the biggest softest soft points going, driven as hard as they can be so they expand massively. Which would seriously bust up a Lion at point blank ie. when they hit 4,000 to 5,000 ftlbs would be dumped catastrophically into flesh and bone busting up stuff, pulverising, ripping, shattering bone ie. have an obvious effect.

The yokels either missed or the bullets sailed through pushing neat holes in poor Leo but not shedding much energy. Leaving a Lion to frolic in their midst.

In fact the old Poms not only had big soft points for their lion load projectiles they had gaping splits cut into the jackets as well as the soft points to ensure massive expanson.
