Danger, Will Robinson!
I have two or three times examined guns which had had lead shot inserted in a cavity in the butt: the shot oxidized over time, and the oxide took up enough extra space to split the buttstock. A solid slug of lead would be better, particularly if varnished or liberally coated with an epoxy, both to seal the lead from oxidation, and retain it in position in the stock.
