Bad advice in my opinion. Cheap red dot sights have a habit of stuffing up. Some you have to hunt around to find the dot. Known quite a few to do this. Aimpoint is the brand others try to emulate. I have had them for years and not one has let go. Buy a good brand. Pay once, cry once.
As Eagle did say, try and have your dad check out a few to see if he likes them.
