Based on my limited exposure to doubles, this can be taken with a grain of salt, but I can't say anyone rifle has been better than the other in all catagories. Fit and finish would have to be a Westley Richards .500 (Pre-WW2). Feel and handling a Francotte 9.3X74R. Overall would go to any rifle built by Army & Navy. (I prefer plain-jane utilitarian English Doubles.) Judging by the bolts I have seen, Hartmann & Weiss would be a definate number one on my list for best. They have to be the only company I have found that I feel has done justice to the double square bridge Mauser design, with modern day metalurgical advancements. Now, if I could only be so lucky as to stumble upon a H&W double to spend some time fondling... As a side note and slightly off topic, call me an attatched American, but in the realm of bolts, as well as I appreciate H&W, I don't think there is a more utilitarian bolt built than a Pre64 M70 Winchester, and would shine in field duties where as the H&W would be better suited sitting on display to be oogled. (There is the reason I prefer the Army & Navy to other "better" makers such as WR & H&H, as well.) |
