I wouldn't loose confidence in the rifle having only fired one sort of factory ammo through it. As suggested if you can find out what ammo it was loaded for and use that or try to duplicate it if it isn't available readiy I think you may have more luck.

A nice light Chapuis in .30-06 if shooting well will be a nice piece to use.
