In reply to: Classic, Curl! I have bent 3 stocks myself, its a piece of cake. All three were bent to alter drop at comb, not bent to alter cast, but obviously the same principle applies. I remove the trigger-guard, then clamp the action-bar in a padded vice. A jig is then built with scrap timber so that a furniture-clamp can put pressure on the butt while hot linseed-oil is ladled over the wrist. As the wood heats up, a little pressure is applied to the clamp, all the while ladling the hot oil over the wrist. The secret is to work very slowly: I would take more than 30 mins to complete a 1/4-inch bend. When the required end-point is reached, the wrist is wiped down and the whole thing left in place for 24 hours or so. One of the stocks I did moved back slightly, so I re-did it, and the second time it stayed put. The others were fine with one pass. My first attempt was on a Cashmore sidelock that required a 3/8-inch reduction in drop at comb! No problems at all. |
