CptCurl is quite correct in his opinion of small bore double rifles! I have owned many small bore doubles, both O/U, and S/S and they are very useful hunting rifles. Though I love all double rifles, the S/S is my favorite no matter the chambering! There are plenty of small doubles around, from 22 Highpower, to 9.3X74R. Though I have never owned a rimless double rifle, and probably never will, and since they are not intended for dangerous game it makes no real difference, if that is what you want! One of the best doubles I've ever owned was a little H. Berrela 8X57JR, made in Berlin. It was a back action sidelock hammer rifle, and shot 196 gr soft or solids into a 2" group at 100 yds with Iron sights. With a good rest, with the right barrel which had a set trigger, it would print four shots in 1/2" at 100 yds. That rifle accounted for many Muledeer, and black bear in the mountains of New Mexico. I think you will find, no matter how many doubles you own, the little ones will get a regular workout, simply because they are so much fun to shoot, whether hunting, or just stump shooting! My favorite double today is a little Merkel 9.3X74R, and I simply love shooting it! |
