Bar in wood action

Ive seen a few doubles, mostly older, that have an action that is referred to as a bar-in-wood action, can anyone explain the specifics of what makes these different than the common back actions or boxlocks? I noticed the cross pin isn't visible as it usually would be, is that the difference that the stock wood covers the front section of the action?
