Re: Target shooting with your doubles & big bores

In reply to:

Personally shooting a bunch of numbered circles does absolutely NOTHING for me. I like to hunt with my rifles and prefer to shoot game targets. Photos or cut-outs of a deer, or pig, or buffalo.

NitroX,

I definatly agree with you. But I do sometimes shoot at circular targets, usually only when sighting in a scope etc. And because I still have quite a lot of small, 30 meter circular targets I "borrowed" from the military.

Most shooting I do is on fullsized Reindeer targets (the standard used when taking the yearly "big game shooting test" we have here in Norway). Or fullsized roedeer targets.

Once a year, before the moose hunt starts, we have a shooting competition between our "hunting team" (10 people), and our nabouring "hunting team". This is at various animal figures, such as reindeer, badgers, roedeer, hare, and fox. 5 shots at each target, and 5 differant targets (a maximum of 125 points is possible). The distances vary from 100 meters to 40 meters, and all shooting is done while sitting on cut up tree stumps (to simulate shooting while sitting in the forest). The targets are set up in 5 differant locations along the side of a road we use (towards a safe backround naturally), and 5 guys go off at a time up the road and rotate/continue to the next target area when finished with the targets they were shooing at. So you get to walk a bit too, which is good as it gets the pulse going a little.

2 of us use our 375H&Hs, while the rest are the common moose caliburs of 30-06, .308 and the odd 6.5x55. The funny thing is that the 2 of us that use the .375 usually win, or come in second place.

Since this yearly competition began some years ago, the level of marksmanship has risen a lot amongst our hunting team members. The reason is simple; the object is not to personnally win (although that's nice too!), but for our team to beat our nabours team! It's a matter of honor!

It's not bigbores or doubles, but at least it's towards animal shaped targets!

Erik
