I have a .416 Rigby that I load 400gr at 2400fps, and I can take only 5 shots offhand before I start flinching. I can not imagine what a .700 NE would do. It would be like firing a .50BMG without a muzzle brake.

Moss,
Hi buddy long time hey,
I would love to shoot a 700NE but I don't even know someone who owns one!!!!

Big chunks of lead yes but are they really that effective and does the price of the rifle and the ammo reflects on the effectiveness??????????????????????????????????????????

I believe that the few people who used the .600 NE thought it was too heavy and overpowered for anything but extreme close range emergencies. I might be wrong here, but I think the guy who had Jim Bell and Hollands develop it (a Mr William Feldstein) wanted the biggest simply because it was THE BIGGEST and the same goes for anyone who could afford to have one built. I don't think any one would order a .700 NE with the genuine intention of hunting with it. I would love to hear if some one has, though.

A story I was just told in Africa was that a wealthy collector/hunter/shooter (can't remember his name) paid H&H for the LAST 600 NE. ie he insisted as part of the purchase they never make another one.

Then another guy also with too many $$$, a German I believe, said he wanted a 600 NE, and he was told it was impossible, he instead said why don't you build me a 700 NE and paid for tooling etc.

Not sure whether this story is true but I have also heard before H&H was contractually bound to never build another 600 NE.

I would think for practical use they are too much gun and the recovery time after recoil in the field would be a problem.

Practical rifles bore probably finish in the 500 range. But you can still have fun.

Hi Nitro

I've also read that when Mr Feldstein (an American according to Frank C Barnes in 'Cartridges of the World') approached H & H for a new .600 they refused as they had already built, sold and publicized 'The Last .600'.

However, if you go to the gunroom at www.hollandandholland.com you will see them offering to build new Royal double rifles. £75300 for a .577 or .600; and £105,900 for a .700 - bargain! Can you imagine taking one of those into the bush?

I've just recieved a copy of 'Big Game and Big Game Rifles' by John 'Pondoro' Taylor - man who knew what he was talking about. In it he says that the .600 is rarely used nowadays (the book was originally published in 1945) as the advantage offered by the power is more than offset by the weight. He also says that he killed considerable numbers elephant with a 'little'(!) .600 by Jeffery and testified to its effectiveness, particularly in close cover. I suppose that everything said about the .600 would apply to the .700, only more so.

I must admit to having never fired a sporting rifle of more than .375 calibre, so this all pretty academic. However, a nice .577 NE double....

Hey, guess what? I've just read a post on a site - www.accuratereloader.com - about someone who has shot a .700! It was at H&H's shooting ground in west London. He said that he was barely able to take a second shot and, at $100 US per round, didn't really want to!

Another thing to check out on Saeed's site is the videos of people firing his .577 Tyrannosaur.

When you see recoil like that and how it affects people one really needs to question just how effective some of these "super" recoiling rounds such as 577 T-rex, 600 NE, 700 NE are.

As compared to someone firing a 375 or 416 or even a 450 and being able to recover for the next shot in a reasonable time.

Another site to check out is

http://www.african-hunter.com

AH is an excellent hunting magazine based in Zimbabwe and on their web site is a story of a guy building a 4-bore double rifle and then taking it to Africa to hunt with. Awesome looking firearm. The two muzzles could swallow you up.
