Thought you all would enjoy a laugh. This was extracted from one of the other forums....and in my view represents lack of understanding of the subject, yet will be viewed as somehow totally valid "Never hear the 458 and 416 rem as being "problematic" in double rifles. The belted case was designed ESPECIALLY for such use in stopping rifles. i reload for the 8x57R and the 30-06 (rimless in double rifles). No real problems. The double rifle is probably a historic/nostalgic thing!!! I certainly bought mine for a nostalgic reason, and preferred to take my m700 custom 416 to Africa for dangerous game. If you look at the BRNO Stopper (one of my doubles) I think your will find it in both the 458 and 416 rem mag. The 416 Rigby is not considered a good double rifle cartridge DGR or just a light general purpose rifle; as that is a rimless case. Only reason I can glean on the "problematic' issue is that double rifles are usually a "Brit Thing". and both the 416 rem and 458 win are strongly American. The 458 and the 416R are probably the top two cartridges used in Africa by Phs. The 416 is chosen mostly by PHs under 50; with the 458 by Phs over 50. reasons they are available in quality inexpensive guns ( Rem 700 and Ruger 77) and are in bolt guns. PHs using backup rifles for DGR SELDOM IF EVER use double rifles. Being a PH is a profession, and money is the goal. Double rifles in Africa are hung on the wall, SOLD, or used in TV commercials...seldom carried. i did borrow a client rifle in 470 NE on a Safari, decent rifle and was good on baboons; but I'd rather have a 458 3 shot bolt gun for lion or elephant. But the ejectors were cool! Seeing those tube eject like a 12 ga 3 inch shotgun double." |
