Re: double rifle use in the rain

seroadglide,

I was hunting with Marrakai in Darwin, both carrying doubles and it poured with rain,
however both guns were fine afterwards. I coat my guns with a combination of Wool Fat
and Petroleum Grease (I heat the up together in a Saucepan and then pour them into
film cannisters so I can take it with me).

Like the others, I own guns to use them, however I did buy a Merkel 470 to make sure
that I had one double that I could use and it wouldn't worry me if it got damaged by
rain or I really did take it into a swamp (I can be rough on hunting guns).

However last week I carried an Old Brno 603 in 375H&H and a Stainless Steel Ruger in 338
when it rained for 3 days straight as we knew we had absolutely no way of keeping the guns
dry. Even then it rained that hard that the Brno 602 stock got saturated and needed to be well dried
afterwards. In this case I was sensible not taking my double but it is unusual for me not to carry one.

You have reminded me to check the seals on my Brno's

Hope this helps.
