Re: Cheap, knockabout, double

Have you considered a drilling with slugs? Most of my drillings will meet your accuracy requirements with Brenneke slugs. If one is patient, a very nice one can still be had for around $2,500. I've found the slugs option to be quite fun on hogs!

As you're in the market for opinions, let me offer this:

I long ago realized a "knock about" was something that sounded good early on in my journey with fine and/or vintage guns, but ultimately I discovered they just didn't interest me. I'd take out something of a "knock about" on a rough hunt, only to wish I would have brought the Paton or the Alexander Henry, or the Dickson, etc. Interesting guns interest me, and make my hunt more fun.

I duck hunt in the sloughs of eastern Arkansas with a Premier Grade W.C. Scott 10b, or a Greener 3" 12b, and if it were legal I would have a certain E.M. Reily 8 bore with me. The hunting is tough, messy, ugly work with decoys, dogs, and rednecks all jumping through the muck and the mud. That being said, I take the proper English approach and have re-browned the barrels, and the stock is properly re-oiled every few years in my shop by my own hand.

Many of my guns have nicks and dings in them from previous owners who enjoyed them prior to my acquisition. During restoration work I rarely remove these. I know each and every one of them was placed there during the pursuit of an enjoyable hunt. And while I take very good care of my guns and rifles, I plan to add a few of my own before passing them on their way to new homes.
