Sellier & Bellot ammo is very accurate in my Funk drilling, and shoots to the same point as some older Norma ammo I inherited. Bullet performance with the S&B 8x57JR is not alpha. Hitting one shoulder of a whitetail deer at 250 yards smashed the jacket down one side over one third the length of the bullet. It is a wonder the lead core did not spill out. Bullet was recovered under the skin on the far side. It appears to me that the jacket is somewhat thin compared to premium bullets whose jacket thickens the further down you go, controlling expansion. Have not sectioned a bullet to examine, however. I shudder to think what would happen to the bullet on a hog at point blank range, given the destruction at a slowed down 250 yds. The one ace in my favor was the length of the bullet--it could afford to smash up and still plow on. (as long as it held together, which is the real question...) I like the 8x57, but feel it is one round which really benefits from premium bullets...in that regard, it is too bad you don't reload. Steve |
