I have seen in the last 2 days 2 English rifles who each have the number "10" stamped in the bottom of the wooden stock behind the pistol grip. Below the "10" there is a 3 digit number on one and a 2 digit number on the other one. The numbers are very small and the rifles are a Webley 1902 single shot and a Dougall double rifle. I once owned an English double rifle that also had numbers stamped on the bottom of the stock and a friend of mine who has since passed away said that the numbers on that gun meant that it came from Bikaner. My question is: Are these small numbers indeed indicative of guns coming from India. If so, what region of India would the number "10" indicate. I am guessing that the "10" indicates a region in India and the numbers below the "10" indicate a running total of the guns coming from that region. Thanks, Larry |
