The barrels are like that to keep the weight down.This action was made as a double rifle action and if you could see the top of it,it has a bissel rising bolt third bite as on a Rigby.You have to remember that when this rifle was made that Boss's had only built under a handful of double rifles and everything was still very experimental.The scope mount does look dreadful but then Boss's were the only people at that time to build an O/U rifle so didn't have the benefit of being able to see how others had done it.
