As for the dissolving of most of the Gurkha Regiments, like the one they dissolved in Hong Kong a few years ago (?) I have always thought if our Australian gov't wasn't also snivelling and balless (both Libs and Labor), Australia should have offered to take over the tradition. AND provide citizenship and family resettlement opportunities after a period of service by a Gurkha soldier.
Better value for our country than some we accept too willingly today.
Australia was offered the Gurkha regiments that went to Hong Kong. We just had to provide the land and the Brits would do the rest. However in our pollies infinate wisdom we knocked the offer back. From hazy memory they would of been based in/near Darwin.
