30 - 40 yards and holding level or slight low (like shooting a tiger from your elephant) is ideal.

50+ yards begins to push the limits unless you have an exceptionally fine rifle.

Ashamed to admit, when Marrakai and I shot his .577 ( and three other doubles) in Darwin a few years ago, yep, the "pattern" on the target was not impressive. All on the pistol target but looked a bit like a pattern. The photo is somewhere on NE. Then Marrakai photoshopped it for a better memory.
