Even with tripod sticks I try to put my leading hand under the rifle and on top of the cruciform to prevent 'bounce' once fired. Recoil (if I lose control) then pulls my hand away from the sticks and not onto them.

I doubt I could get a steady rest on a mono or bi-pod and would prefer field positions (which I've been trained in) or a rest provided by nature.
