Differences of opinion are what make this interest of ours so fascinating. However, I believe that you are missing the point entirely. A reasonably proficient shot, with a .416 or a .500-416, launching a 400 grain bullet at 2400fps, will make consistent killing hits out to 300 yards, because of the relatively flat trajectory, and high sectional density, of that projectile. Thus these cartridges can serve as dangerous game ones at close quarters, and can also put down an antelope way out and beyond. This is not a reasonable expectancy for a .450NE, a .470NE, or a .500 NE.
Valid point, I'll pay you that one.
However does 375 and maybe 404J fit the bill ? .
500
I think the 375 and 404j would fit the bill---however in my experience..which is not huge but have shot a few critters in Africa--(72)---on the bigger stuff..the 416 just seems to have a more noticeable effect on them above what the .375 does...is it necessary??? probably not..as they say, dead is dead...
I do agree with the above statements..for as heavy of a bullet it shoots and still exceeding 2400fps..IMHO, pretty hard caliber to beat for all around --from the little guys to ele.. really seems to "tame them down a bit"...
