Differences of opinion are what make this interest of ours so fascinating. However, I believe that you are missing the point entirely. A reasonably proficient shot, with a .416 or a .500-416, launching a 400 grain bullet at 2400fps, will make consistent killing hits out to 300 yards, because of the relatively flat trajectory, and high sectional density, of that projectile. Thus these cartridges can serve as dangerous game ones at close quarters, and can also put down an antelope way out and beyond. This is not a reasonable expectancy for a .450NE, a .470NE, or a .500 NE.
That is a good point and something that the .500/416 was marketed on ie flat shooting capabilities.
And with a 300 gr pointed projectile, probably even flatter.
On re-reflection I think a .500/416 with a 450 gr bullet is easily equivalent to a .450 with a 480 gr bullet. And probably better penetration.
Does anyone know what velocity a .416 450 gr projectile will do in a .500/416?
