Re: Rem/Baikal 45-70 Ammo Question

The Hornady ammo is not suitable for elk or moose. While it will work fine on broadside shots, it lacks stiff enough jackets for deep penetration. I am merely repeating what a friend found last year in Terrace, BC, on moose. The bullet hit a rib going in, blew the lungs up, which worked fine, but didn't even make it through the off side rib cage. It's a bit soft - stick with 405 RP or 400gr. Speer bullets at about 1,700 to 1,800 fps and you'll have complete success. You don't need more speed than that, although at 31,000FPI - you can achieve close to 2,000fps.
A Hornady 350gr. RN is a super deer, moose and elk bullet, if driven around 1,900fps. This has been my experience with that Hornady bullet. RP 405's are very accurate, excellent hunting bullets if not driven over about 1,850fps and allow seating out and crimping in the rear groove (if the chamber allows), which normally increases accuracy and case capacity, which allows loading to the same velocity at slightly reduced pressure, if that's important to you.
