The slacum process goes as follows: - the stock is sanded several times, with wetting between sandings to raise the grain. - the 'slacum' is applied and left to dry till about the consistency of toffee. - the surplus slacum is removed by wiping it off with a cloth moistened with stock oil. - finish with several coats of stock-oil.
