It's only the RHS of a coat that needs to be free from pockets, flaps etc. like you, I've ditched a few pieces of clothing or Sewn up the one that was catching.

Plenty of room on a coat to sew a couple of loops on.

the suggestion of a couple of elastic loops on the wrist is a good one. You can actually buy these off the shelf.
