April 17-19 Rock Island Auction is selling off the vast Winchester collection of Peter and Patty Murray, includes guns made specially for them. Lot 1587, estimated to sell at $45-65,000, is a truly dreadful Model 21 .375 H&H made in 1978 "after several years of inquiry." In other words, they pestered Winchester until the factory surrendered and made it. The details of this contraption, which weighs more than 12 lbs. and has a Monte Carlo high cheekpiece, are spread over two pages of the catalog. Among other amazing features it is freebored to reduce chamber pressure and has "pressure relief ports" on "the underside of the frame." This travesty is topped off with some genuinely cheesy engraving by Nick Kusmit. Overall a genuinely sad specimen. |
