For most of my shooting with the Ruger #1 in 458 Win Mag I use what I believe may be the powder that caused all the controversy. The difference is, I don’t compress it. Instead, I load IMR-4895 at 100% loading density and am satisfied with 2000+ fps with 500 gr bullets. If I were going to Africa to hunt dangerous game I would use H335 and push my loads to 2150 fps. But at 2000 - 2050 fps, the Ruger makes a fine American gun. Lighter bullets make for a fine 200-yard deer gun too! However, when I hunt deer with it, I tell people it’s a 45-70, so they’ll leave me alone. For some reason it’s okay to kill deer with a 45-70, but it’s “wrong” to use a 458 Win Mag. Some people! (Of course, usually I don’t tell anybody anything, because I rarely hunt with anybody.)

Get yourself a 458; you’ll enjoy it.
