Re: What caliber for a 1st Double??

I am looking at a French double in 9.3X74R for reasons already mentioned. Price, flexibility for North American and most African game, and reasonable ammunition costs. The absolute largest thing I would be hunting is a buffalo... either Caper or Asian... and perhaps some large bear. This round will deal with them and still be a reasonable choice for most plains game, deer, elk and feral hogs. I have a .50 caliber muzzleloader double that I hunted in the RSA, in Florida after Asian buffalo, and on one black bear hunt. With 600 grain loads and 120 grain powder charges it approximates at short range the power of a 9.3X74R. A little light for buffalo from my experience but dandy for most game.
