I was told many years ago that tip off to whether a given double rifle is BP or Nitro is the front sight. Supposedly BP guns have front sights mounted directly on the rib, like shotgun sights, but Nitro rifles have ramps which raise the front sight above the level of the rib. Is this a useful distinction?
